Hair transplants are an excellent option for African American people with hair loss or thinning. The connection between different hair types and race comes down to the shape of the follicle. This impacts the look and feel of hair, but does not affect the ability of people to regrow their hair to combat thinning or loss. While some people try to change the style of their hair to hide thinning or hair loss, the most effective solution is a hair transplant.
The best method for hair transplantation for African Americans is
follicular unit extraction (FUE). FUE is the extraction of thousands of hair follicles from a healthy area of the scalp (an area where the hair is still thick). The other common hair transplant procedure is called
follicular unit transplantation (FUT), which requires a strip of healthy scalp to be removed, leaving a scar, and the follicles are harvested from the strip of healthy hair.
FUE is the recommended procedure for anyone of any race getting a hair transplant today, but it is especially beneficial for African American patients. FUT leaves a large scar that would be visible if one were to wear their hair cropped close to their scalp, like many African American men prefer to do. By using the FUE method, we can guarantee that there won’t be any scar left behind, and that we are getting enough healthy follicles to transplant to the areas that need them.
There is a common misconception that a hair transplant for African Americans is an entirely different procedure than a Caucasian hair transplant. The procedures are similar, but it is important to find a hair transplant specialist who has experience working with African American hair, like
Dr. Yates. Dr. Yates has stayed on the cutting edge of hair transplantation science and specializes in FUE.
There is no set age for when people may need a hair transplant. We have had patients
as young as 25 through middle age or older. The cost of a hair transplant does not vary based on the race of the customer - an African American hair transplant is not more expensive than a Caucasian hair transplant. Despite the minimal differences, you will still get your desired result: a natural-looking, full head of hair.
Just like any other type of hair transplant, an African American hair transplant only requires
a short amount of recovery time. You should be back to your routine in a few days. If you can take a few days off to recover, that is always beneficial. Try to avoid vigorous exercise and highly processed foods for the first week - this will prevent inflammation and swelling. Do your best not to rub or brush the grafted area after your procedure. If you wash your hair, use a gentle shampoo and a light touch.
About a week after your transplant, any scabs that have formed will start to fall off.
Do not pick at them as this could cause infection. After a few weeks, the transplanted hair grafts will fall out . Do not panic about this. They are simply getting out of the way of your new hair growth. You can return to your regular styling routine and exercise activity after a week.
Most hair transplant patients suffer from
traction alopecia (hair loss or thinning because of tight braiding or styling) or
male pattern baldness. If you exhibit either of these types of hair loss, a hair transplant could be the right option for you. Transplanted hair ages the same as regular hair, so there is a slight chance that your transplanted hair may grow thinner over time. While it is unlikely that your hair transplant will fail, if it does, you can always re-address the issue with another hair transplant.
