Understanding Hair Loss in Women

Posted on: December 12th, 2016 by Dr Yates

Led by Dr. William Yates, the Yates Hair Science Group offers a full range of therapies at its new downtown Chicago office. The Yates Hair Science Group employs advanced techniques, such as follicular unit transplantation (FUT) in addressing issues of hair thinning and loss.

Affecting women as well as men, hair loss has a number of instigating reasons, including issues with anemia, weight, and thyroid-related hormonal imbalances. Low levels of iron and a poor diet can also result in hair loss, as can extended periods of stress.

Other causes of hair loss for women include childbirth and chemotherapy cancer treatments. The good news is that these types of hair loss are reversible, as the follicle itself is not compromised and can regenerate growth. Maintaining a balanced diet and a properly functioning endocrine system are essential to healthy hair volume.

Another female hair loss condition, androgenetic alopecia (AGA), a genetic predisposition of male hormones in the body, is not reversible. AGA involves gradual thinning over a period of years. Innovative approaches such as FUT allow restoration of volume with an entirely natural appearance.

Nonsurgical Approaches to Hair Loss

The Yates Hair Science Group is a Chicago provider of advanced therapies for those experiencing thinning hair or baldness. Offering the latest technologies and equipment, the Yates Hair Science Group has surgical options, such as follicular unit extraction, and nonsurgical options, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stromal vascular fraction (SVF).

FDA-approved for more than three decades, PRP is a process of drawing a patient’s own blood and separating the platelets at a specified concentration. The platelets are injected at the follicular level into the patient’s scalp, which stimulates stem cells and growth factors essential to maintaining a full head of hair.

Used in tandem with PRP, SVF, also known as stem cell therapy with fat transfer, focuses on adipose, or fat tissue, which contains concentrated stem cells. The fat cells are harvested, purified, then mixed with PRP prior to injection into the scalp for maximum impact in fighting hair loss.
